Lumber Grades

Lumber produced from logs can vary depending on the type of log, knot size and growth characteristics.  This is why grading systems have been developed over time to allow builders and other users to be confident that the lumber they have purchased is being used for the appropriate application.

Radiata pine lumber is produced mainly from two log types:

Pruned Logs: from trees that have had branches removed while growing, usually in three periods, within the trees first eight years of growth up to a height of six metres. This results in the new growth being clear of knots.

Knotty Logs: from trees which have not been pruned (or from pruned trees but above the pruned area). This type of log will generate knotty grades.

Eucalyptus grandis lumber is produced mainly from Butt logs

Lumber can be produced in a range of sizes (widths and thickness), depending on particular applications.

Common widths and thicknesses, all rough sawn (millimetres)

Width                                                             Thickness

50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 200, 250, 300        25, 38, 50

Random Width                                              36, 44

A range of different dimensions or special sizes can be produced but will be determined by the supplier.
